One question about block 8

I am working on block 8 right now, and have a question. It is marked 1, 2, 3, 4... on the pattern, some on the leaves, and some on the grapes. What does the number mean? Is it the order of which one I should start to applique first, or does it mean that the parts with the same number should have the same color? Can someone help me? Thank you :=)

First Block

I started (unimaginatively) with Block One.  The colors are not as garish as they appear, but I can't seem to figure out how to adjust them - they are more warm -- the birds (with the stray thread, just noticed) are actually brown...  Very, very enjoyable process.  A friend from another blog sent me some fabrics to include both as support and because she wanted to be a part of this quilt without having to actually make one herself!

I am very happy and excited when I found this blog. I totally fell in love with the Civil War Bride Quilt the first time I saw it in this blog and soon decided I also would like to make one for my son, especially after reading all the interesting posts. I am reading the blog backward from the eldest post right now, just entered 2011, and it was still interesting. I got the pattern yesterday, and purchased the background fabric one week ago. I think I will stick to the basic white cottom fabric, as I am not an experienced in appliqueing or quilting, so I will just choose the easiest solution.

A bit about myself. I am Lucia from Norway, originally from China. I have a son soon turning 2 years old, and I live with my husband in a town called Eidsvoll, close to the airport in Oslo. I have made one quilt only, and that took me two years :=P. I am determinted to not to spend two years on the Civil War Bride :=)

First finished block

This took me ages of time, but finally it's a finished block. I started with the oistriches, because it intrigued me, to find birds like that on a quilt. As a fun detail I added two pieces of fabric that belonged to a friend. She and I did our Jane quilt together and now we are doing the Bride Quilt together. I think she doesn't remember I borrowed this little piece of fabric when we did our masterclass applique last winter. For her it might be just a piece of fabric, but for me it is more than that, it's a memory of our friendship and I hope to do more projects together!
